The main focus of my PhD project is hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) as a potential treatment for preeclampsia (PE).

PE is a pregnancy-related disorder defined by high blood pressure accompanied by proteinuria. It is one of the most common causes of maternal death and severe pregnancy complications. However, the only available treatment for PE is delivery of the baby.

Due to its immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory properties, HCQ has been suggested as a potential treatment of PE. However, the effect of the drug on placental vasculature is still unknown.

I aim to investigate the effect of HCQ in a model of preeclampsia-induced endothelial activation and dysfunction at the maternal endothelium as well as at the fetal side of the human placenta.
