My research interest is focused on Human Milk Oligosaccharides (HMO) and their novel roles in pregnancy. Fascinated by the finding that HMO are already present in the maternal and fetal circulation during pregnancy, I am interested in how these prenatal HMO are regulated and whether they impact pregnancy outcome, maternal and/or fetal health.

I use epidemiological studies to investigate the potential influence of life-style factors (e.g. physical activity, diet) and maternal metabolic status, including metabolic derangements such as gestational diabetes and obesity, on HMO concentration and composition. Investigating the in vitro effects of HMO on cells of the feto-placental unit, I hope to elucidate how prenatal HMO might contribute to developmental programming, with potential consequences for the offspring later in life.
